Video game giant Valve is going to release its first hardware product ever, and according to some reports the company will launch a “Big Picture Mode,” test that will be done using participants from the general public. This is said to be an attempt by Valve to bring video games into consumer’s living rooms. The New York Times wrote in its blog that Valve had been discussing a few ideas that it had in mind over the years but did not process yet, Valve also confirmed this. The User Interface or UI of Big Picture Mode is said to be clear and very responsive, users will have a choice to interact with Big Picture using a controller, a mouse and/or a keyboard. One of the problems that TV was facing was onscreen keyboards, an issue which Apple solved giving users a QWERTY keyboard app on the touch screen of their iPhones and iPads.
However, Valve has a different solution for the same problem; with a “lotus” style keyboard users are able to use a controller or a mouse and keyboard, when navigating through the different “petals” of the so-called lotus flower. A representative from Valve said in an interview with Kotaku that even though the new style might sound as if it’s complicated, people who start using it find it much more efficient than a QWERTY keyboard solution. Valve is promising that its Big Picture Mode will be user friendly much like Apple’s TV option. On Valve’s website it posted an article that said that the feature would come with full support for a controller, and all this will allow users to play games like football and yet still be able to play other games they like on a big screen which doesn’t require them to add anything else on it. Valve gamers will be able to get Big Picture Mode starting on September 11 on the company’s website.
