Mozilla Company is developing an application platform with cross-browser support

According to the information presented in Mozilla Labs blog, the community works on rather interesting initiative that has a symbolical title Mozilla Labs Apps Project. The final goal of this project that is meanwhile staying at Developer Preview stage, apparently, is to create a platform for browser applications which can work in any Internet browser supporting them. Tools for development and creation similar applications will be soon released.
Thus, users can expand functionality of browsers as much as they wish, simply acquiring and installing necessary applications, which are just like in a case with ordinary operating systems. These applications significantly increase possibilities of operating systems. It is necessary to tell that the similar approach is not something absolutely new. Let us remind about Chrome Web Store from Google. However Web applications, extensions and themes are offered only for the Google Chrome browser and a Chrome OS operating system.
At the same time Mozilla’s approach seems to be more universal. Really, after all web standards like HTML, CSS, JavaScript and others are general-purpose, so applications constructed on their basis, can work properly in any modern browser. We would like to add that the community invites developers to take part in a platform testing. The first three thousand registered in Mozilla Labs Apps Developer Preview will participate in testing process. The first results of the given project should be marked next year.
