E5 family of Xeon processors has been released recently in Hanover and this innovation is considered to be a significant detail in the product line. The launch of this product and its two varieties are the most famous events according to the CeBIT tech show. First variety is the E5-2600 that was created for the two processor sockets and the second variety is the E5-a600 that can be used only for single-socket workstations.

The creation and development of the Xeon chips is an integral part of Intel’s business. Servers and everything related to this market are at the height of popularity now, besides, many spheres and types of business depend on such utilitarian networked machines. Will it play Crysis??
Finally some love for the Pro?
Its nice to see news about real computers. It almost feels like apple doesn’t care about professionals and is instead focusing on the iOS toys.
I currently own a 2006 Mac Pro that is obviously starting to get a bit old. I have thought I might be able to get a year or two more out of it, but that’s a stretch. Needless to say, I am pretty interested in a new Mac Pro being released, especially as I am still a student and could utilize a student discount.
HOWEVER.
I wonder what the future for the Mac Pro is and whether I will be able to upgrade my machine in 3+ years. The main reason to pay the premium for a Mac Pro is upgradability, expandability, and being able to use the monitors that I have instead of being forced to buy one with an iMac. What happens if Apple decides that they no longer want to make Mac Pros and all of a sudden I won’t be able to upgrade the graphics card to extend the life of my machine? If I was unable to upgrade the graphics card in the machine that I have now, it wouldn’t have lasted nearly as long.
Oh boy, here we go…
I applaude this news; I really feel for the fans of the Mac Pro and Classic iPod–they’ve (I guess this includes me…) been left in limbo for quite some time!
Not going to happen with Ivy Bridge and integrated USB3 around the corner.
wrong. Ivy Bridge CPUs suitable for the Mac Pro is still well over a year away
Battlefield 3 is the benchmark now.
Two technologies that Mac Pro customers won’t be overly concerned with. Ivy Bridge is more of a player in the mobile space and USB 3 takes a back seat to Thunderbolt in storage speed and latency.
If those iOS “toys” were soley responsible for making you BILLIONS of dollars, and helped make you the richest company on earth….I’d bet you focus on those “toys” too.
Oh please hurry. I rely on Macs with more than the 4 cores currently available on top end iMacs, and i’m not willing to buy a 2 year old machine at those prices! Plus i’m after Thunderbolt. I really hope Apple push the boat out with this update. But i have to admit to not expecting much.
I know Mac Pros aren’t exactly Apples bread and butter anymore, but it says something about their company that they’re putting no effort into it at all by the look of it. If companies like Sony can sell products for everybody ranging from consumers to broadcast professionals and maintain high quality products throughout those ranges. then surely Apple can too.
Thank the lord. Time to buy my first Mac Pro. My 2002 Power Mac G4 is still chugging along, but can’t really keep up with modern scientific computing anymore. Also, Tiger’s getting a little old. Switching back and forth between Lion and Tiger gets annoying.
Seen the amount of time and resources Apple has spent on OpenCL (like optimizing Final Cut X for it) I doubt the Nvidia move…
Either way, AMD or Nvidia, Apple has always seen substandard support from both in the high end market, maybe Apple could provide its own graphics (OpenGL 4++) – OpenCL Cards, instead of buying cards that were built with DirectX in mind.
Apple better start pushing its OpenGL platform forward with mountain lion because they seem to be the largest OpenGL mainstream supporter.
Can’t wait to finally upgrade from my 2006 Mac Pro.
How is this even remotely a good thing? do we really want a mac pro refresh with this and NOT ivy bridge? that’s a huge stab in my opinion, because they would not refresh with this and then again with ivy bridge in 3 months, it’d be either or, and it better be ivy bridge. because if we get a refresh of a revised LAST gen cpu, the see the rest of the macs get ivy bridge, it’s just going to make me mad, because i’ve been waiting for a mac pro refresh for a new mac. But THIS is not what i’m waiting for.
Obviously I’m still more than happy with my 2010 model … I’d take a new gpu though.
Please open the Mac Pro to the full world of Nvidia GPUs (and AMD for that matter). That would be the best update ever
If they do release, I can only imagine how many they are going to sell! People are going crazy over these, and with fear of this maybe being the last mac pro I think nearly everyone who has been on the edge is going to order.
I don’t understand why everyone thinks Apple is going to discontinue the Mac Pro.
On this website I go on from time to time… it says “Don’t Buy – Updates soon”. I’m pretty sure that means they’re going to update them soon.
I for one hope it is true that the Mac Pro will get an update. My have been chugging along for over two years now, and they are great machines.
I don’t think that this is going to come to be. Mountain Lion doesn’t come out till summer time. Yes I know its possible just to upgrade, but IMO I feel that the next MBP line or whatever they call them would make more sense just releasing Mountain Lion on it from factory?
So finally we have the CPUs, but still no MacPro.
Time to really turn on the paranoia!
My faith in God is strong Apple give us the Mac Pro or I’ll have to end this miserable existence.
i’m hoping so much for a new MacPro (as i’m since 4 years a very satisfied MacPro 2008 user)
but i have to admit that i’m really worried if Apple continues the productline … if you look at their current product-portfolio the Macpro seems a bit not-fitting
however i keep my fingers crossed that they’ll update my beloved machine and have the money ready
Desperate for a new Mac Pro… Just sold my 3.33 16gb…
Dont understand why Apple would want to kill the MP line… Even if they dont sell as many… I need this summum desktop even if it’s just to brag about
I have sold ,last year, my iMac 27 because i want more.. More drive, more possibility with PCIe…. More everything…
Give my Sata 3.0 6G and thunderbolt plz…
Gimme more core..more speed, more Ram…gimme gimme gimme!
It’s for to play around the ipad browsing the internet but if i need to work….Mac Pro all the way!!
Hey come on people… It’s only been over a year and a half since the mild update (CPU and GPU upgrade) last seen for the Mac Pros… /rant
There are plenty of professional film editors, motion graphic designers, and 3D designers that need the power and customizability of the Mac Pro. Let’s hope that Apple utilizes this and actually updates the Mac Pros with more than a minor speed upgrade…let’s do this!!!
Can I just get a Mac Pro priced like an i7 iMac without the 27″ screen?
Seriously. Take $1000 off for the 27″ screen and sell me a brand new quad Mac Pro for $1200.
After last year’s 15″ MBP and 13″ MBA, I was beginning to fret about what my large expenses for 2012 might be. Sure my MP ’08 is still in fine shape but I like the knowledge that if something goes wrong it’s covered under AppleCare which as of this month, ran out one year ago. I’m already looking forward to an iPad 3 to take with me on customer visits but a new MP would fit nicely on my expense line this year.
Phew! So the 89 pro-sumers in the market for a Mac Pro will be happy. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple killed the Mac Pro line this year.
No other confirming rumors though… Yet.
I hope Apple doesn’t dissolve it’s professional support. There’s something intrinsically beneficial to the company’s integrity; they shouldn’t forget where they’ve come from.
Hope this finally triggers the update, if for no other reason than it will most likely bring support for a current GPU to most PMs.
We had to buy a new computer before the end of the year so we got a Dual 4 core Mac Pro refurbished and saved a couple hundred bucks. Works like a champ.
A lot of people will have eat a lot of words about Apple abandoning the Mac Pro line.
hope this is true, better start cleaning the desk off for my thunderbolt display!!
(I hope it does have thunderbolt)
MP has a longer life IMO, as some have said, due to so many upgrade options. GPUs, HDs, optical and RAM are easy to swap or add to. My G5 lasted 6 years before it finally couldn’t run the last OS. Plus paying for a screen is a waste with each cycle if you have a nice monitor already. I would rather put those dollars into the computer.
Finally. Hopefully intel will not have such problems when ivy bridge xeons get into production.
I can find iMac-class desktops for much less than the price of a MacPro, but as others have mentioned, these “70% cheaper” Dell equivalents appear to exist nowhere but in fertile imaginations.
Would certainly welcome a link demonstrating otherwise…
Let’s see it Apple. So the Mac Pro doesn’t make a lot of money for the company anymore… But what it does give Apple is much needed credibility with the professional community. Remember Apple, how we kept you alive through the dark years? We stayed by your deathbed, feeding you our hard-earned profits though a straw after Windows 95 did a hit and run on you.
We might be a small minority of your customers now, but we’re still a passionate and vocal minority. I feel credibility within the pro market does filter down to consumers one way or another.
its really about time!
This is some really good news!
Mac Pro desperately needs some love.
I wouldn’t expect Apple to drop the Mac Pro line. It seems that lots of folks are simply waiting for this upgrade to buy, then sales should improve.
